I like Tangle for news. It's a newsletter and they do a deep dive on a news topic each day and provide what the left and right are both saying on the same issue, and then the editor provides his take. It's a really interesting, balanced way of looking at things and it feels less overwhelming because it's one topic. They also are great with correcting themselves, responding to reader feedback and questions, etc. I've been a paid subscriber for a little over a year and think it's really worth it but the M-Th newsletters are free.

Ooh, OK, I will for sure check that out! This sounds like a great resource. I really appreciate knowing how news is being represented on the right. Often on social media I will make the mistake of looking at comments to see how the internet is discussing topics and that's absolutely always the wrong way to go 🙃

I feel that! I'm trying to eliminate rage bait from my life this year and it's...so difficult.

Your word of the year 🙌🏻 I’ve been feeling really similar and have had a hard time navigating how to be informed but not buried. Sipsworth is up for me at some this year and I’m really looking forward to it. Is it to soon for me to plan a Little Women reread this next Christmas?haha Marmee sounds delightful but I have read LW in almost 25 years.

Yesss! I really, really need to make a sustainable plan here. It's honestly very hard for me to check out completely (and not what I'm going for anyway) and way too easy to just passively consume. I need to be intentional but still figuring out exactly what that looks like.

And definitely not too early to plan a Little Women reread, something to look forward to! I truly think December is the perfect time to read! If it were me I'd start late in the month and maybe carry it into the New Year 😃

Was it The Skimm?? I used to love their newsletter! wouldn’t say (at all) that NYT is unbiased, but it’s the only place I check national news now, usually for 5 minutes near bedtime. Since I’m not on any social media (besides Substack, but I mostly avoid Notes here), any news content is highly curated and not up-to-the-minute. Roxane Gay’s newsletter is a good roundup of newish stuff, and I love Links I Would Gchat my friends. I also receive email newsletters from The Atlantic and New Yorker, not usually in-the-moment either. My two local TV stations have apps that I keep for school closings, and I occasionally quickly peruse their stories as well. I’m still haunted by my constant eye on the news during 2020-2021….I never want to return to that place. Thanks for writing about this!

It was The Skimm! It was so good when it first came out! At some point it began to feel more like a place for affiliate links. I'm sure it's been sold many times over at this point. Thank you for the recs! I will definitely check out those newsletters. I was getting Axios bc I enjoy their local newsletter, but the national one is too clickbait-y. I may end up just trying out a digital subscription to the NYT. I'm worried I'll be disappointed by clickbait-y news but I could be totally wrong about that. It's been many years since I actually subscribed to a news outlet. I do enjoy newsletter type roundups bc of the way they pull from multiple sources, or even if they're from a single outlet they allow for a good, quick overview with the option to dig in more to what you want, but obviously you have to find the right one. Thanks again for the recs!

I will say that I detest the fact the NYT has resorted to more clickbaity headlines, and that their opinion pieces are highlighted so much, but I have started ignoring all of their opinion content bc it just enrages me. I think it’s only $4/month for a new subscription? I have started to figure out how to adjust their content to make it more personal, and largely pass by most politics content. While NYT is in no way perfect, they do still have the funding to do in depth journalism that many places don’t. The NPR app is also a good one to have, even just for headlines and general updates.

All news is so clickbaity, it's just not something that can be avoided in the current media landscape and I hate it. I didn't even think about something like NPR having an app! Duh. I'll check that out too! I'm so hesitant about apps vs something like a newsletter or digital subscription bc I don't need another place to scroll or have to block a bunch of notifications. I think I'm going to need to have a period of trial and error to figure out what works for me bc I know the right resources are out there! I just have to be intentional about finding them.

Wishing you well in being less informed. I think the biggest thing for me is paying attention to where I'm paying attention - a regular practice to unsubscribe/unfollow. It's definitely ongoing work. Also, I'm here for all the soup recommendations!
